Matthew Wolfenden returns to Emmerdale as co-star 'quits amid race row'

Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden has returned to the filming of the studios following a backstage row allegedly following race-related comments between cast.

Matthew, who plays David Metcalfe, has been absent from the soap since October, with his character vanishing after a huge dramatic event in which he was almost killed in rapids.

Isabel Hodgins, who plays love interest Victoria Barton, also left filming as show bosses dealt with behind the scenes turmoil.

Both characters were explained to have been away on holiday after almost being killed at the hands of murderous Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu).

The pair were at the centre of Meena’s huge storyline, prompting confusion among fans that the characters did not form a part of the aftermath.

Metro.co.uk has since seen images of Matthew posing for photographs with fans outside of the studio as he drove away.

This seems to signal that he has returned to the show, although the same is unable to be confirmed or denied of Isabel.

ITV had no additional details to give originally, with a spokesperson reiterating: ‘We don’t comment on cast contacts.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted representatives for the show for further comment.

The photos were taken on December 14, before filming for Christmas wrapped up.

The news comes in the wake of major rumours that Aaron Anthony, who plays Ellis Chapman, has quit the show in the wake of the row, with a source telling The Sun that he has been left angry over the handling of the argument.

They said: ‘Aaron is bitterly angry about this situation and he has had to be persuaded to come back to Leeds to film his scenes in recent months.

‘He has done some filming over the last couple of weeks, but the understanding is that those scenes will be his last.

‘He has been very vocal in his opinions about the allegations and about the way in which the enquiries have been handled by the bosses.

‘He now feels his position on the show is untenable.’
