Indian gangster drama Mirzapur made its big comeback recently with fans working their way through the 10 new episodes. The Amazon Prime Video show follows gangland warfare and a power struggle in the titular Indian region. Sacred Games

The obvious one is Mirzapur’s Netflix rival Sacred Games which came out mere months ahead of the show’s debut.

Sacred Games is based on Vikram Chandra’s tome of the same name and charts the rise of Gopalmath gangster Ganesh Gaitonde (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) from his humble beginnings.

However, the thriller is more than just a gangster show, it is set against the backdrop of police officer Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) trying to avert a catastrophic nuclear attack on Mumbai which will take place in 28 days.

Be prepared to go on a journey through the history, politics and culture of India as viewers race towards the end

Spanish-language series Narcos documents the rise of the illegal drug trade in South America involving legendary drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura).

The show saw the USA’s Drug Enforcement Agency battling against Escobar as he built up his empire.

Narcos was one of the most successful non-English language shows when it dropped and spawned a spin-off series Narcos: Mexico.

Narcos: Mexico saw the action relocating to Colombia and the origins of the modern-day drug war starting with Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna).

Queen of the South

Queen of the South follows queenpin Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) who goes from a woman on the run from a drug cartel to establishing her own business.

The show was inspired by the popular telenovela La Reina del Sur, which itself was adapted from the novel of the same name by writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

However, Queen of the South has veered away from the original series and is carving out its own identity.

The show is going into its fifth season as Teresa continues to build up her drug company while facing enemies on all sides.

Peaky Blinders

Classic gangster drama Peaky Blinders takes things back to 1920s Birmingham with a family building up a criminal enterprise after World War One.

Steven Knight’s epic series has become a global smash hit with fans from all over the world eagerly lapping up each twist and turn involving Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his family.

The show is based on the real-life Peaky Blinders gang but mixes fact with fiction to create compelling drama against some cinematic aesthetics.

Peaky Blinders is as violent and sexy as any shows in the gangster genre come but it’s also one of the most unpredictable in terms of plotting.

Emmy-winning drama series Ozark is something of a different beast with Chicago financier Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) forced into a life to crime after his partner’s dodgy dealings land him in trouble with a drug cartel.

Marty uproots his family to the Ozarks in Missouri in a bizarre scheme where he promises to launder money for the cartel in exchange for sparing them.

As Ozark goes on, viewers will see how this middle-class American family get caught up in the world of crime.

Ozark has been compared to Breaking Bad as the Byrdes seem to leave their clean-cut lives further and further behind with each passing season.
