Steve Harvey, 64, has come under fire after asking Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu to do an impression of an animal, while other finalists were given the opportunity to discuss their accomplishments. The 21-year-old model was taken aback by the host’s bizarre question on the world stage. Many Miss Universe 2021 fans were left baffled by Steve’s question to Harnaaz, which they branded “ridiculous” and “frustrating”.

Steve took Harnaaz completely by surprise on the main stage of the international beauty pageant by asking her to do an impression of an animal.

He said: “I hear you do some pretty good animal impersonations. Let’s hear your best one.”

The women’s empowerment advocate replied: “Oh, my God, Steve, I was not expecting to do this on the world stage.”

Remaining poised and professional, she added: “I have to do this – I have no other option.”

The Indian beauty told the crowd she loved cats and would try her best to sound like one.

“Brace yourself everyone”, she warned before letting out a few “meows” while holding her hands like paws.

The moment did not go down well with many Miss Universe fans who questioned why the finalist wasn’t given the chance to talk about her accomplishments.

Miss Great Britain Emma Collingridge on the other hand was able to talk about how the myth of Medusa inspired her to fight against gender-based violence, and Miss Panama Brenda Smith discussed getting a position at the United Nations.

Despite not being able to discuss helping her mother teach women’s health and hygiene at camps, Harnaaz was crowned Miss Universe 2021.

But fans took to Twitter to vent their fury over Steve’s animal question with Sarakshi Rai commenting: “OMG Miss India meowing at Steve Harvey is not what I was expecting to see tonight.

“Pretty sure the Miss Universe organisation could have asked a better question… Very frustrating but she was nothing if not confident.”

Katherine Arias added: “What a ridiculous first question was that? Miss India had so much more to say… #MissUniverse2021”

Nyiko Khoza Speaks fumed: “I still can’t believe it?! Like, really?! A whole Miss Universe competition and they made her meow like a cat?!”

However, some fans of the pageant jumped to the host’s defence, with Cybaniga remarking: “Steve Harvey doesn’t make the questions, he gets paid to read the cards and teleprompters.

“If you’re going to be upset, direct it to the producers and officials of the event.”

Vanessa Renaud added: “Steve doesn’t make the questions he just asks them. Maybe they wanted to see her reaction to such a silly question, to see how she would handle it.”

Harnaaz was crowned the 70th Miss Universe, topping a field of about 80 contestants from around the globe.

The reigning Miss Universe Andrea Meza of Mexico crowned the 21-year-old model at the pageant which was held in Israel on Monday.

Harnaaz told the crowd: “Know that you are unique and that’s what makes you beautiful, stop comparing yourself to others.

“I believed in myself, and that’s why I’m standing here today,” she added, to applause from the audience.”
