Netflix Revives 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' for Next Interactive Special

Co-creator Tina Fey announced the revival episode with series stars Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane for 2020.

After "Black Mirror" and Bear Grylls, Netflix is sticking with its successful foray into interactive television, reviving one of its most critically-acclaimed series for the next adventure to be chosen by viewers.

"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" co-creator Tina Fey made the announcement at the Netflix FYSEE panel, telling attendees that the show would be returning for one very unique episode in 2020.

The Ellie Kemper-led series wrapped its run in January after four seasons and 18 Emmy nominations, including four for "Outstanding Comedy Series." Now it will have the chance to compete in a whole new category.

"’Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event," Fey said. "Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series."

Kemper will be joined by series stars Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane, per TV Guide, but what the episode will be about and how it will be interactive remains a mystery for now.

The series finale put a pretty definitive bow on the ongoing storylines of the series, with Kimmy writing a book, leaving the door wide open to explore totally new experiences. Or they could go completely wacky and make the entire episode breaking the fourth wall and really leaning into the silliness of interactive comedy.

What’s most important is that this new format allow them to squeeze in as many opportunities for song and dance as could be reasonably expected. Oh, and maybe a few cameos tucked into some of the show’s more avant-garde choices.

"Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" had literal hours of exploration in the format. As "Kimmy Schmidt" will be the first comedy to play with this new approach to television viewing, we have every confidence that Tina Fey and company will find new ways to make us laugh with every choice, along with lots of silly surprises.
