Phillip Schofield left Holly Willoughby and ITV viewers in shock as he announced his plans to leave This Morning and start a new career.

Phillip, 58, broke the news after a government careers surgery suggested he could retrain as a paramedic.

TV presenter Phillip, who recently collapsed on intense Million Pound Cube challenge, took the quiz and then shared his decision.

He said: “I've just announced I'm leaving This Morning and I'm going to become a paramedic.”

Holly responded by joking it was “nice knowing him”.

Phillip quipped it was an “unusual way” to share the news but revealed he was going to train to work as an ambulance crew member as he and Holly prepared to interview a pair of paramedics who are also mother and daughter.

As ambulance crew Maisie and Nicky spoke with Holly and Phil, they revealed they thought Phil would make a great addition to the crew.

Maisie said: “You just have to be kind and make people laugh – you’d be great at this!"

Nicky echoed her daughter’s sentiments as she added: “You would be brilliant! You would look great in green!”

It comes after Phillip shared a screen shot of the results of his government quiz on his Instagram story.

The image showed the site had suggested he should become a paramedic or solider.

As he shared the image with his 3.2million followers, Phil joked: “As advised by the Govt I’m looking into retaining… these are the suggested options for me” followed by two laughing face emojis.

After sharing the results, London Ambulance Service said they would be keen to have Phillip on board on Twitter.

They wrote: “Hi @Schofe – being a paramedic is a rewarding and challenging role. We think you'd be great!”

Meanwhile, NHS Jobs Twitter account also attempted to poach Phillip as they wrote: “We couldn't agree more! @Schofe, we have over 280 #paramedic vacancies live on NHS Jobs right now. Begin your search today: jobs.nhs.uk”.
