Strictly’s Johannes says relationship with mum has ‘improved’ because of John Whaite

Strictly Come Dancing professional Johannes Radebe has revealed his history-making all-male partnership alongside John Whaite has also had a huge impact on his personal life.

Opening up during a press conference, Johannes told OK! and other outlets that he feels much closer to his mum since dancing with John. That’s because it’s encouraged the mother and son duo to have conversations that they would never have had in the past.

The 34 year old South African star explained: “My mum’s relationship with me has improved, and it’s improved because of this partnership. For that, I’ve won.”

“I’ve won because my mum follows my journey with John religiously. If anything, that, for me, is the biggest takeaway from this partnership.”

Revealing more about how their dynamic has shifted since she watched him dance with the Bake Off star, Johannes continued: “We’ve never confronted me and my issue and this whole thing.”

“When I told her about the partnership she said, ‘Oh you’re dancing with a man?’ I replied, ‘Yes mum, I’m dancing with a man and his name is John.”

“There was an awkward silence and she said, ‘Ok…’ Like everyone else, she waited to see how it was going to play out because she’s such a traditionalist.”

However, just like the rest of the nation, Johannes’ mum fell head over heels for their partnership after seeing their incredible performances.

The former Celebrity MasterChef continued: “I remember on our first Tango she called me and was like, ‘Oh, that was brilliant!’ It has been special.”

Similarly, Steph’s Packed Lunch star John said he’s received supportive messages from people up and down the country.

The 32 year old said: “We’ve had so many messages like that. We had a video message from a man.”

“He was in his building outfit on the building site at 5 o’clock in the morning and he said, ‘I’m a straight man, but what you’ve done is brilliant, lads.”

“We’ve had so many people say, ‘I was doubtful of this partnership at first but watching you dance we can see it’s about the dance.’”

That’s just one of the reasons the duo are so happy to have made it all the way to the grand final this Saturday (18 December).

Trying to put into words how ecstatic he is to have made it to the end alongside John, Johannes explained: “I am so happy I can’t even begin to tell you, but I’m mostly proud of us.”

While John added: “Every single week has been a little remarkable revelation for me – about myself, about our partnership, about what it means to be two men dancing together.”

“And about what it means to have self-confidence, self-belief and what it means to be accepted. Every single week there’s been little life lessons that Strictly has taught me.”
