The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Everything We Know So Far

The third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel hit Amazon on December 6, 2019, and the streaming service quickly ordered a fourth season of the popular show.

The series is up for a whopping 20 Emmys in 2020, including an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, and a Lead Actress nom for Rachel Brosnahan.

Here’s everything we know about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 so far.

Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is thrilled to continue Midge’s journey.

Gilmore Girls creators, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, revealed in an Amazon Prime press release, “We were thrilled to hear that for the fourth time, we do not have to pack up and vacate the premises.” They continued, “We’d like to thank Amazon for all their faith and support, their partnership and enthusiasm, and for letting us hang with our favorite people, the cast and crew of Maisel, for a little while longer.”

Amazon is all in.

The Head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, said, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been a worldwide phenomenon, and Season 3 has been no exception, with the series’ most watched opening weekend ever. We’re so happy that our Prime Video customers will get to see Midge’s story continue in Season 4.”

Clearly, the show’s popularity and speedy renewal is all down to the fans watching the series all over the world.

Coronavirus has affected production.

Unsurprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed production schedules across the board, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel isn’t immune. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-showrunner Daniel Palladino revealed, “King COVID is the showrunner right now… King COVID is the master of us all right now. It remains to be seen whether productions are going to be fully running before there’s a vaccine. It looks daunting.”

The plot of Season 4 has been planned out.

Palladino told THR in August 2020, “We know what happens in season four—we could write it, but none of us really knows when we’re going to be producing these things. We’re all just sort of crossing our fingers and hoping for the best.”

Back in 2017, Sherman-Palladino told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think we know what our trajectory is for the first four to five seasons. And then I just want to see if I’m still breathing at that point.” However, she did hint that Midge’s popularity as a comedian would only grow each season. Per Sherman-Palladino, “Her personal journey is really what the show is about and so it’s not really a spoiler to say, ‘Oh, by the way she’s going to be famous or she’s going to be successful.’ This show is really about how her shifting dynamic affects her family, her husband. It’s really about all of those personal dynamics.”

It’s thought that the majority of the cast will also return for Season 4, including Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, Tony Shalhoub, Caroline Aaron, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, Kevin Pollak, Luke Kirby, and Jane Lynch.

It’ll delve into the ’60s.

Sherman-Palladino revealed to THR, “We fucked [Midge] up pretty good at the end of [Season 3]. We’ve knocked her back a few times on the show. But that’s what show business is. It’s one step forward, two steps back—that’s the life of a comic. And let’s not forget, we’re still talking about a female comic in 1960. It’s hard enough for a female comic to get a toehold today, but forget about the ’60s when there were, like, four of them.”

Caroline Aaron, who plays Joel’s mom on the show, told GoodHousekeeping.com in December 2019, “As we move into the ’60s, which we are going to do by the end of Season 3, the world is going to certainly be pulled out from under Moishe and Shirley’s feet.” She continued, “The world they knew is going to be a very, very different world. Midge is going to bring that world into this family, and I would imagine it’s going to be hard for us. I don’t know that for sure, but all the rules are changing, and let’s see what that means.”

Susie’s gambling problem could be an issue.

As The Hollywood Reporter noted, Susie’s gambling became even more prominent in Season 3. As Midge is yet to find out about it, Susie’s problems could create a lot of drama in Season 4.

Per THR, Susie has entrusted Joel with Midge’s money and said, “I can steer her career, I’m gonna make her a very big star, but the money… I need you to protect it.” Eek.

The waiting game begins.
