The highly anticipated season 11 of The Walking Dead is right around the corner and it’s set to reunite fan favourites such as Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan). AMC’s upcoming instalment will also see the addition of a new character Mercer (Michael James Shaw), and the actor opened about his eventful first day.

Fans of the zombie apocalypse series will be meeting Mercer, who will become a series regular in season 11.

In the Walking Dead comic books the character is portrayed as a strong man with a dominating presence which accurately reflects his ranks.

Before the apocalypse, Mercer was part of the United States Marine Corps which made him the entitled officer of the Commonwealth Military.

The comic books also saw him romantically linked with Juanita ‘Princess’ Sanchez (Paola Lázaro), who first appeared in season 10.

Although the showrunners have remained tight-lipped about Mercer’s on-screen appearance, in March the actor took to Instagram to confirm his role.

During a season 11 San Diego Comic-Con at Home panel, Michael was interviewed and asked about his first day on set.

To which he responded: “Man I was about to s**t a brick, it was daunting stepping into this huge machine but there was a lot of love from the cast, crew and they welcomed me with open arms.

He added: “It’s always great to step into a family, it’s a beautiful thing.”

After his social media announcement, fans were excited to see another addition to the series, despite it coming to an end – tons of them took to his comments to share their exhilaration.

One viewer wrote: “Yes Mercer is my favourite in the comic commonwealth arch! Can’t wait to see you in the orange suit.”

Another fan commented: “Congrats!! Can’t wait to see you in action!!! Finally got a Mercer

One weighed in: “Congrats, I love Mercer in the comics! I know you will be a perfect Mercer.

“Yassss I’m so excited you definitely were the perfect fit for the role,” a fourth added.

Season 11 will also see the addition of other characters including Lila Robbins will be playing Pamela Milton and Josh Hamilton who will portray Lance Hornsby.

Margot Bingham and Richie Coster will also be joining the cast of The Walking Dead, but bosses have yet to reveal whom they will star as.

This role as Mercer will be Michael’s latest addition to his franchise list, as he previously played villain Corvus Glaive in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and Midnite in Constantine.

He is also best known for his recurring role on Limitless as Agent Mike.

Although the showrunners haven’t always stuck to the comic book, fans will have to tune into season 11, to see if Mercer’s romance with Princess will be portrayed onscreen.

Elsewhere in the interview, Michael spoke on how great it was joining the show: “This experience has been a joy, especially coming off of last year.

“This was like a silver lining at the end of a tunnel. An awkward kid who loved to read comic books, getting to step into the shoes of a really awesome comic book character is just a dream,” he added.

The Walking Dead season 11 premieres on AMC in the USA on August 22 and will be available to watch on Star via Disney+ in the UK on August 23.
