Tipping Point contestant Jack left fans perplexed when he offered his thoughts on what the key poultry product in Mary Berry's famous Victoria Sponge Cake was

The college lecturer was the first contestant to buzz in to share the answer to Ben Shephard's question.

While many may have known the answer almost instantly, Ben quizzed the hopeful four as the gameshow got underway.

Ben asked: "On Mary Berry's website the ingredients for the sponge in her Victoria Sponge Cake includes which poultry products?"

"Butter," said Jack while looking confused.

Clearly startled by the response, ITV favourite Ben replied: "Butter? Butter, Jack?"

He added: "Do you know many chickens who lay butter? Butter is entertaining though Jack, your mates will like that one."

Fans couldn't contain themselves as they flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the amusing moment.

"It depends on if it's a female or male. Males lay slightly salted butter I think #TippingPoint," said one.

While a second penned: "Butter is a poultry product? You absolute wazzock! #tippingpoint."

"I love a hard-boiled butter I’m not gonna lie #tippingpoint," joked a third.

"Jack is leaving #TippingPoint with egg on his face. Or is it butter?" laughed a fourth.

Sadly for Jack, his time on the show came to an end after the first round as he failed to secure any counters over the tipping point, leaving him with £0 in his bank.

Elsewhere in the episode, Sheffield-born contestant Phoebe left people perplexed when she misheard a question from Ben.

She appeared to mix up "rodent" with "continent" when Ben asked: "The Alpine marmot is a rodent found in the mountains of which continent?" to which Phoebe responded: "Rat".

"The famous f*****g continent of… RAT?! #TippingPoint," fumed one social media user.

While a second added: "We’re all living on that large continent Rat. New name for Europe. #TippingPoint."

"Going anywhere nice on holiday? Yeah, Rat…. #tippingpoint," joked a third.

Phoebe left the competition in the third round after failing to answer correctly the destination of the Riveria Sleeper Train that leaves London Paddington.

The South Yorkshire native was left confused and claimed that the train is a sleeper to Yorkshire, despite it heading to Cornwall which is dubbed the "English Riviera".

Retired costume designer Meryl went on to win the programme and walked away with the grand prize of £10,000 and revealed she would be using her cash to revamp her camper van.

Tipping Point airs weekdays from 4pm on ITV.
