Earlier this week, Nicola Sturgeon refused to rule out the reintroduction of Covid restrictions in Scotland as the country faces rising case figures. On Tuesday, for example, Scotland saw a total of 4,323 new cases which was the highest figure since the July peak. Ms Sturgeon’s comments became the topic of a heated debate on Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine on Wednesday as a result, prompting stand-in host Trisha Goddard and guests Emily Carver and Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu to clash.

“It’s hardly a surprise coming from Nicola Sturgeon, I think,” Carver said in response to the First Minister of Scotland’s comments.

Carver continued: “She’s been very heavy-handed with the restrictions north of the border.

“I think also the latest news that she’s potentially having this enquiry sooner than Westminster is, the UK Government, is also an indication perhaps that she wants to get one over on the rest of the UK Government.”

Surprised by Carver’s claims, Goddard interjected to quiz: “So you’re saying this is more political than anything else?”

Carver stood firm: “I do think that many of the decisions Sturgeon takes has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

“She’s very much a PR actor, she has very good public relations -“ she continued before a shocked Goddard interrupted: “Really?”

“She’s very savvy when it comes to sticking the boot in,” Carver blasted before the Jeremy Vine host turned her attention to Dr Shola.

Goddard asked: “Isn’t she just trying to protect the Scots from yet another spike in Covid, Shola?”

Defending Ms Sturgeon, Dr Shola replied: “It is, that’s what she’s trying to do.

“And to be honest with you, Nicola Sturgeon has done a much better job on the pandemic than Boris Johnson has.

“I mean there is no denying or even arguing about that,” she argued but Carver wasted no time in hitting back at her fellow guest: “That’s simply not true, simply untrue.

“Particularly with the vaccine rollout, it was much quicker in England than it was north of the border.”

Taking aim at Boris Johnson, Dr Shola snapped back: “Oh for goodness sake,

“Why is it because of the vaccine rollout, everyone wants to forget how incompetent the government has been?

“And people forget why the vaccine rollout has been successful.

“You want to give Boris Johnson’s government credit for something they should’ve been doing anyway when really it was NHS staff (and) all the scientists who’ve been working their butts off – not Boris Johnson.”

It’s fair to say many viewers were divided on the debate as they weighed in with their thoughts on the row.

“Thank god Emily is on today to balance things up because at the moment it’s two against one,” one Channel 5 viewer vented.

“Sturgeon has one agenda only,” added a second, while a third added: “Sturgeon will destroy the economy of Scotland the people should get that woman out of government before she destroys the economy and jobs.”

However, another hit back: “Sturgeon is the only one even contemplating doing the right thing. Again the selfish of this country have increased infection and death rates.

“Time for another lockdown and all because people won’t do the sensible thing. This time maybe Boris will grow a spine.”

Jeremy Vine airs weekdays at 9:15am on Channel 5.
