Netflix’s Virgin River followed the life of Melinda ‘Mel’ Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) as she relocated to the small town from Los Angeles looking for a fresh start after the sudden death of her husband Mark Monroe (Daniel Gillingham). Ahead of the release of season four, the actor hinted at his return to the series.

Throughout the series, fans learned about the tragic losses the nurse practitioner suffered before her move to the northern California town.

It was revealed, during her marriage, she suffered a traumatic stillborn birth after a long and intrepid journey to becoming pregnant.

This caused Mel to battle post-traumatic depression and due to the difficulties, her doctor suggested she use a surrogate.

However, this caused a huge rift in her relationship with Mark as he wanted a break and Mel was desperate to continue.

During flashback scenes, the couple was driving through a storm when they were having a heated argument about going on IVF.

After taking his eyes off the road for a split second, a truck ploughed into their vehicle.

Although Mark was taken to the hospital he later died from his injuries, with Mel at his side.

Despite making his appearance in the show in flashback scenes, the actor hinted fans could see more of his character’s backstory in season four.

In an interview with Mr Waburton Magazine, Daniel was interviewed about the upcoming instalment to which he cryptically replied: “Here’s what I’ll say, somewhat enigmatically, the good news about being the dead husband is that you can appear at any time. I’ll leave it at that.”

The season three finale saw Mel make a drastic move to become a mother and this could be where Mark could make another appearance.

When she relocated to the small town, she met the local bar owner and ex-marine Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) and the two hit it off.

They became an item but their relationship faced a huge challenge after he learned his ex-girlfriend Charmaine Roberts (Lauren Hammersley) was pregnant with his twins.

After telling Mel he didn’t want any children with her, the two broke up and a desperate Mel visited a reproductive clinic and was secretly inseminated with embryos from her relationship with Mark.

The final scene saw Jack come to his senses, drop to one knee with an engagement ring and confess he did want children with Mel.

Mel was shocked and simply responded “I’m pregnant,” this caused a huge frenzy amongst fans who were trying to predict whether the baby was Mark’s or Jack’s.

This revelation could see her dead husband return to the screen with more insight into their relationship.

Perhaps Mark’s appearance could bring her clarity as her pregnancy progresses in season four.

Fans will have to tune in to the upcoming instalment to find out the identity of her baby’s father.

It will also reveal the real reason behind Mark’s potential return.

Network bosses are yet to confirm season four of Virgin River, however, express.co.uk will be updated with new information about the series.
