Jack Whitehall: Travels with my Father season five has just premiered on Netflix but the release is bittersweet for fans. Earlier this summer Whitehall made the announcement that this would be the last season of the show after five years. With fans already binging the last season, many are wondering why the star made the decision to bring the journey to an end.
Why is Jack Whitehall Travels with my Father ending?
The first four seasons of Jack Whitehall: Travels with my Father has seen the star journey across 14 counties.
Now, Jack and Michael Whitehall are venturing throughout the UK, bringing the show full circle since its 2017 debut.
Neither Whitehall nor Netflix have given an explicit reason for the show coming to an end, though it looks to be the result of two things.
The first is the show coming to a natural end, with Whitehall first Tweeting about season five on August 25.
The Tweet showed the first trailer with the caption: “All good things must come to an end. Travels With My Father: The Final Journey is launching on @NetflixUK on September 14th.”
During the trailer, Jack Whitehall says: “Sad it’s coming to an end.”
Michael Whitehall replies: “We’ve had a great time and I’m sure we’ll do lots of other things together, just no more travels.”
Another reason the show is likely coming to a close is due to the coronavirus pandemic, making international travel exceedingly difficult for film crews.
The reason for the pair staying in the UK this season is due to coronavirus restrictions, forcing them to remain close to home this time around.
Jack, 33, and Michael, 81, will go on three more travels in season five, with the first episode seeing them enjoy a meal cooked by Gordon Ramsey and tour Winston Churchill’s home.
Fans have loved the series because of the banter Jack and Michael share, with their two polar opposite personalities often clashing.
Michael is routinely shocked by Jack’s behaviour, but the genuine bond the father and son team have is obvious to see.
Though, viewers have debated just how scripted the series is, with the show often being described as a part scripted sitcom.
Yet, it appears the moments they are thrown into are often unscripted, with Michael’s comments routinely taking Jack off guard.
That is unlikely to change for the final season, with the trailer already showing the bickering around the UK.
Jack has several projects currently in development, both as an actor and comedian, most notably Jungle Cruise and its recently announced sequel.
Jack’s next major project is the Clifford the Big Red Dog film reboot, with the trailer causing a stir on social media earlier this summer.
There is a buzz online over the fifth season of Travels with my Father, with many viewers sad the show is finally coming to an end.
One fan wrote: “Can’t wait!!! Sad to know that it’s the last season!”
“Please don’t end the series!! I love this show,” added another.
A third commented: “These two are, by far, the best father son duo in the history of comedy.”
Jack Whitehall: Travels with my Father season five is available to watch now exclusively on Netflix.
