Modern Western Yellowstone has been gripping fans since it premiered a couple of years ago. The family drama set on a ranch near the Yellowstone National Park has been compelling as the Duttons struggle to keep hold of their land from outsiders who seek to take it from them. The show is led by double Oscar winner and Hollywood A-lister Kevin Costner as patriarch John Dutton.

Did Cole Hauser nearly reject Rip Wheeler role in Yellowstone?

Alongside Costner, Yellowstone stars British actress Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, BAFTA-nominated star Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton and Cole Hauser as taciturn ranch handler Rip Wheeler.

Yellowstone gave an insight into Rip’s background and how he came into the orbit of the Dutton clan.

Rip came from a troubled home with his mother abused by his stepfather, leading him as a teen to take matters into his own hands.

John struck a deal with Rip, pledging to serve him and in return he was taken under the wing of the ranch and the family.

He is fiercely loyal to the Duttons because they are the closest thing he has to family and they anchor him.

Fans have fallen in love with not only the character of Rip but also his romance with Beth, which has been on and off since the show started.

The pair finally looked like they were planning to make things official after she proposed to him, however, all of this could now be destroyed.

Season three’s finale saw Beth left in a life or death situation after an explosive detonated shortly after it was sent to her offices.

If Beth has indeed died, Rip could either seek revenge against those who killed her or he could even leave the ranch realising the beloved Duttons are pretty much all dead and gone.

However, Yellowstone could have looked very different without Hauser’s portrayal as Rip.

Speaking recently to Decider, the American actor addressed whether he’d had any reservations about taking on the role in Yellowstone.

He explained: “I don’t know where that rumor comes from. That’s not true.

“Back when they were casting, I had just come off a TV show I did for four years. I’d been all over the world doing it, and I was looking for that next thing.

“I didn’t know [Yellowstone creator] Taylor [Sheridan], but I knew [producer] John Linson very well.

“I just wanted to talk with Taylor and say, ‘Hey, where’s this character going? Who is this guy to you and to John Dutton?’

“And after the conversation I had with him, I was in. He told me the thing that I was looking for, which is that I want to see colors in a character.

“I don’t want to just play the cowboy that rides the fence line. I want to have at least that kind of wave of colors, and Taylor was like, ‘If you trust me, you give me this opportunity and we’ll find that.’”

The decision appears to be one which paid off with Rip being a huge presence on Yellowstone.

Along with Hauser’s work in Yellowstone, he has featured in TV series Rogue, Chase, ER and K-Ville.

His film credits include 2 Fast 2 Furious, Running With The Devil, Olympus Has Fallen and A Good Day to Die Hard.

Season four is in the works with production expected to be commencing soon as the next chapter of ranch unfolds but just how the massive cliffhanger will be resolved remains to be seen.
