How do I register to vote for #election2020?

THE PRESIDENTIAL election is on November 3 and registering to vote ahead of time online can prevent mishaps on Election Day.

In 2016 roughly 60 percent of Americans showed up to the polls to vote. Additionally, in 2018, there were 153million people registered to vote in the US.

Here is more on the list of states that have online voter’s registration.

Alabama

Alabama enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2016.

To register for the election you need to be a citizen of the US, a non-felon, have a valid ID card, be at least 18 and must reside in the state.

Registering online will provide information about polling places on the day of election and absentee ballots by mail.

Voter registration is closed 14 days before the election.

The deadline to register is October 19.

Alaska

Alaska enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2015.

To register for the election online you must have a valid Alaska ID that matches the files of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), otherwise you will need to fill out a paper application. 

You are not officially registered until your application is approved and it may take two to four weeks to find out. 

The deadline to register was July 19.

Arizona

Arizona enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2002.

To register for the election you need to be a citizen of the US, a non-felon, have a valid Arizona ID card, be at least 18-years-old and must reside in the state.

Voter Registration Applications must be completed 29 days prior to an election in order to be "registered to vote in that election."

The deadline to register is October 5.

The website also allows you to check the status of your registration.

California

California enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2012.

To complete the registration you must provide the last four digits of your social security number and a valid California ID card. 

If you do not have a California driver license or California identification card, you can still use the form to apply to register to vote. 

However, you will need to take additional steps to complete your voter registration.

If you are registering or re-registering less than 15 days before an election you will need to complete the Same-Day Voter Registration process and request your ballot in person at your county elections office or polling location.

The deadline to register is October 19.

Colorado

Colorado enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2010.

To register you must provide a social security number and have a valid Colorado ID number.

If you do not have these items you will be asked to fill out a paper form and mail it to the County Clerk and Recorder’s office. 

October 26 is the deadline to register to vote or update your registration and still receive a ballot in the mail.

Connecticut 

Connecticut enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2014.

To use the online voter registration system you must have a current and valid driver’s license, learner’s permit or non-driver photo identification card issued by the CT Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and a signature on file with DMV.

You are not a voter until your application is approved by the Registrar of Voters and it can take up to three weeks. 

Your application must be postmarked or received by a voter registration agency by the 7th day before an election, or you may register in person with your Registrar of Voters by the 7th day before an election.

The deadline to register is October 27.

Delaware

Delaware enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2014.

To register in Delaware you must be a citizen of the US, be a non-felon, be a resident of the state, and will be 18-years-old on or before the date of the next General Election.

The deadline to register is October 10.

Florida

Florida enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2017.

Registering in Florida requires a valid Florida ID, a US citizen status, and be at least 18-years-old at the time of the election. 

There are certain laws that reinstated a felon’s right to vote. Be sure to read the requirements prior to registering.

You also have the option to submit voter registration information online when you renew your driver’s license online through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ online renewal system.

The deadline to register is October 5.

Georgia 

Georgia enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2014.

To register in Georgia you must have a valid Georgia ID with a signature on file at the Department of Driver services. 

If you do not have a valid ID you will be required to manually submit a paper registration.

You must be at least 17 and a half years old, be a non-felon, be a resident of Georgia and a US citizen to register. 

The deadline to register is October 5.

Hawaii

Hawaii enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2015.

To register on the website you must have a valid Hawaii ID and a social security number.

If you are unable to provide those documents you will be required to fill out a paper form and send a photo ID as well as a utility bill or bank statement to prove address in the state. 

All registered voters will be automatically sent a ballot to their mailing address in Hawaii associated with their voter registration approximately 18 days prior to the election.

The deadline to register is October 5.

Idaho

Idaho enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2017.

To register on the website you must have a valid Idaho ID.

If you do not have a valid ID you will be asked to fill out a paper form and mail no later than the 25th day prior to the election. 

You must be 18-years-old, a resident of Idaho and a citizen of the US to fill out the form. 

The deadline to register is October 9.

Illinois

Illinois enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2014.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day, have a valid Illinois ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon. 

The deadline to register online is October 18 and by mail is October 6.

Indiana

Indiana enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2010.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day, have a valid Indiana ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon. 

The deadline to register is October 5.

Iowa

Iowa enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2016.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day, have a valid Iowa ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon – unless your voting rights were restored.

If you do not have a valid Iowa ID you will be asked to register by mail and submit a paper form.

The deadline to register is October 24.

Kansas

Kansas enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2009.

To register online you must be 18-years-old at the time of the election, have a valid Kansas ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon.

If you do not have a valid Kansas ID you will be asked to register by mail and submit a paper form.

The deadline to register is October 13.

Kentucky

Kentucky enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2016.

To register online you must be at least 17 and turning 18 at the time of the election, be mentally competent unless stated otherwise by a court of law, have a valid Kentucky ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon — unless your voting rights were restored.

The deadline to register is October 5.

Louisiana

Louisiana enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2010.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, live in a Louisiana precinct where you are registering, have a valid Louisiana ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon.

There is an audit code on the Louisiana license or special card that you must enter when registering online. 

The audit code is a four digit number labeled AUDIT on the front of the card.

The deadline to register is October 13.

Maryland

Maryland enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2012.

To register online you must be at least 16-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, live in Maryland, have a valid Maryland ID, be mentally competent unless stated otherwise by a court of law, be a US citizen and a non-felon.

The deadline to register is October 13.

Massachusetts

Maryland enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2015.

To register online you must be at least 16-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, live in Massachusetts, have a valid Massachusetts ID and be a US citizen.

The deadline to register is October 24.

Michigan

Michigan enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2019.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day, have a valid Michigan ID and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 19.

Minnesota

Minnesota enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2013.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a valid Minnesota ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon — unless your voting rights were restored.

Missouri

Missouri enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2014.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a valid Missouri ID and be a US citizen.

The deadline to register is October 7.

Nebraska

Nebraska enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2015.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a valid Nebraska ID and be a US citizen.

Nevada

Nevada enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2012.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must live in Nevada 30 days prior to Election Day, have a valid Nevada ID, live in the precinct of your registration for at least 10 days prior to the election, and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 29.

New Jersey

To register online you must be at least 17 and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must live in your election precinct and state at least 30 days prior to Election Day, have a valid New Jersey ID and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 13.

New Mexico

New Mexico enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2016.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a social security number, have a valid New Mexico ID and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 6.

New York

New York enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2011.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must have the zip code that matches the Division of Motor Vehicles on file, have the last four digits of your social security number, have a valid New York ID and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 9.

North Carolina

North Carolina enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2020.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a social security number, have a valid North Carolina ID and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 9.

Ohio

Ohio enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2017.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, have the last four digits of your social security number, have a valid Ohio ID and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 5.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2018.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a valid Oklahoma ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon.

The deadline to register is October 9.

Oregon

Oregon enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2010.

To register online you must be at least 16 and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a valid Oregon ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon.

The deadline to register is October 13.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2015.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must live in Pennsylvania 30 days prior to Election Day, have a valid Pennsylvania ID, and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 19.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2017.

To register online you must be at least 16-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, live in Rhode Island, have a valid Rhode Island ID, be mentally competent unless stated otherwise by a court of law, be a US citizen and a non-felon.

The deadline to register online is October 4 and by mail is October 13.

South Carolina 

South Carolina enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2012.

To register online you must be at least 17 and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must have a valid South Carolina ID and social security number, and be a US citizen.

Tennessee

Tennessee enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2017.

To register online you must be at least 17 and turning 18 at the time of the election, have a valid Tennessee ID, be a US citizen and a non-felon — unless your voting rights were restored.

Utah

Utah enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2010.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must have a valid Utah ID, have a matching address to Utah’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and be a US citizen. 

The deadline to register is October 23.

Vermont

Vermont enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2015.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, you must have a valid Vermont ID, if not you must upload a photocopy of an ID such as a utility bill or bank statement, and be a US citizen. 

There is no deadline to register, you may register to vote up to and including the day of the election. 

However, if you register online the day before the election or on Election Day, your application may not be processed and your name may not appear on the checklist and you may be asked to fill out another application at the polls. 

To be sure your name appears on the checklist, please register by the Friday before the election.

Virginia

Virginia enacted its online voter’s registration website in 2013.

To register online you must be at least 17-years-old and turning 18 at the time of the election, live in Virginia, have a valid Virginia ID, be mentally competent unless stated otherwise by a court of law, be a US citizen and a non-felon.
