Notorious B.I.G's famous plastic crown sells for staggering £459,000 at hip-hop auction
A PLASTIC crown worn by rap star Notorious B.I.G sold for a whopping £459,000.
The music memorabilia went on sale in New York with the $200,000 estimate – £155,000 – easily met with early online bids.
The auction also had 22 love letters written by Tupac to a school sweetheart which sold for £58,000.
A suit worn by N.W.A legend and Beats founder Dr Dre went under the hammer for £25,000.
Biggie’s crown – worn for an iconic photograph – was the auction’s star sale despite being made from cheap materials.
The New York rapper was murdered in Brooklyn in 1997 and auctioneers Sotheby’s reveal: “The crown worn by Biggie when photographed as the King of New York, 1997.
“One of the most iconic artifacts in the history of hip hop, worn by one of the greatest hip hop stars of all time, for one of the most famous hip hop portraits ever taken.”
And Tupac’s stash of letters to a girl called Kathy also went for a song.
The star fell victim to a gunman in Las Vegas in 1996.
In one he wrote: “Everything is so beautiful since I fell in love. I yearn to kiss you passionately. You are all that I think of.”
Sotheby’s said of the sale: "Sotheby’s is honoured to announce an auction celebrating the history and cultural impact of Hip Hop on 15 September in New York.
“The first-ever dedicated Hip Hop auction to be presented at a major international auction house, the sale reflects on the impact Hip Hop has had on art and culture from the late 1970s through the “Golden Age” of the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, and up to the present.
“Featuring over 120 lots, the auction is comprised of unique artifacts, contemporary art, one of a kind experiences, photography, vintage and modern fashion, historic and newly designed jewellery and luxury items, rare ephemera including flyers and posters, important publications, and more.
“The majority of items on offer in the sale have been consigned directly by artists or their estates.”
Other items were two leather jackets from Salt-N-Pepa’s famous Push It hit which went £18,500.
