Trump: Boris Johnson will ‘do a good job’ if he succeeds Theresa May
President Trump said Tuesday he thinks Boris Johnson will “do a good job,” reiterating comments he made over the weekend endorsing the former mayor of London to take over as prime minister after Theresa May steps down.
“I like him, I’ve liked him for a long time. I think he’ll do a good job,” Trump said during a joint news conference with May.
According to reports, Trump called Johnson earlier Tuesday and suggested a one-on-one meeting during his visit to the UK, but the former foreign secretary turned down the offer, saying he was focused on a political event.
Trump, in an interview with The Sun before he arrived in England on Monday for his state visit, said Johnson would be an “excellent” choice to replace May.
“I actually have studied it very hard. I know the different players,” he told the tabloid.
“I like him. I have always liked him. I don’t know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person.”
May announced last month that she would step down Friday after failing to get Parliament to sign off on legislation withdrawing Britain from the European Union.
