Woman admits to fatally stabbing child in front of father in Mother’s Day attack
A woman has admitted to fatally stabbing a 7-year-old girl in a UK park on Mother’s Day — in front of her horrified father, according to reports.
Eltiona Skana, a 30-year-old Albanian national who was living in Bolton in northwest England, pleaded guilty to manslaughter Friday in the March 22 slaying of Emily Jones, The Bolton News reported.
Jones was riding a scooter in Queen’s Park when she was stabbed in the neck. The girl later died at a hospital.
But Skana, who had been held in a high-security mental health facility following her arrest, pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of murder in the slaying, the newspaper reported. She appeared in Manchester Crown Court via video link.
Emily’s father, Mark Jones, attended Friday’s proceeding, The Scottish Sun reported.
Jones and his wife, Sarah Barnes, said their daughter was the “light of their lives” in a tribute following her death.
“Emily was seven years old, our only child and the light of our lives,” the couple said.
Prosecutors now have a week to consider Skana’s manslaughter plea, while a trial on the murder count is set to start on Nov. 23, BBC News reported.
Mother’s Day 2020 in the United Kingdom, where the holiday is linked to the lunar calendar, was observed on May 22.
